Greetings to all,

Thanks goes out to all that brought in new members and transfers that put Post 21 number 1 statewide at this time though we still have a way to go for 100%. We met the National Commander's challenge on the Dec. 31st membership goals. So it looks like I’m going to Springfield, Illinois for the 78th Annual Lincoln Pilgrimage to represent our Post. I will do my best, and report to you when I get back. I am looking forward to seeing Commander Wong again. This could not happen if we did nothing and settled for 2nd or 3rd place. Our adjutant Ed Murray has worked hard for this Post so I am asking you to stop in and say how much we appreciate Ed’s hard work.

We have better attendance now than in the past for our dinners and dances. The New Year’s Eve party was a sellout. I would like to thank all of you for the hard work it took to make it a success. Keep up the good work and continue to support your Post.

Spring Conference is Feb. 18th and 19th in Jefferson City at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. If you want to attend, please make your reservations as soon as possible.

Our Post meeting will be Feb. 2nd at 7:30 pm. We have had more members coming to the meetings, and we are keeping them informed on what goes on in the Post. This is Your Post. In my first newsletter, I said that my goal was to fill the hall with members. So, if you read this, I know that you are interested in keeping this the biggest and best Post in Missouri.

See you Feb. 2nd.

Commander, Dennis Mooney

Sgt Jackson and MO State Senate Bill SB653

From: Phil Greco

Ed, Can you notify the membership about this? The Jackson Family was our Xmas family 2 yrs ago and they have raised the money and campaigned for this since Sgt Jackson's death.

Brad, Can you post this for the PGR? My cousin Laura Fly has been the ramrod for this and will contact us for the dedication and will request our presense.

All the hard work has FINALLY hit the floor of the Missouri State Legislature! I've never done anything like this before and am so excited to report SB653 had it's first reading (introduction) yesterday!!! If you're reading this and live in the State of Missouri, myself and the loved ones of our fallen hero, Sgt Issac B. Jackson, would appreciate it greatly if you would take a moment to write your representative in support of this bill (can be done on-line)! If you're reading this and you live outside our great state, your prayers are appreciated. Help us spread the word!

AUXILIARY NEWS

As we start 2012,1 would like to thank all who have supported and volunteered this past year. You are greatly appreciated and I know that 2012 is going to be a great year for our Auxiliary and Legion.

Compassion is volunteering. We are always in need of dedicated new helpers. Many times a volunteer is spread so thin because they won’t say no. We all need to search our hearts and see if we could volunteer no matter how small the effort. Asking to work or bringing in a dish for VA Luncheon, working in the kitchen, or at the Saturday Dance is just a few possibilities. We need you. Don’t wait to be asked. Talk to me or one of our officers. We need all the help we can get to be the best of the best.

Congratulations! We have done an excellent job in recruiting new members. We are 98% towards our goal of 440. I would not be a bit surprised to be at our goal or above by the time this newsletter comes out.

Please check our calendar of events and help to support some or all the events we have scheduled for February. Tailgating will be in the lounge for the Super Bowl on February 5. Come and join us for fellowship, fun and good food.

February 14 is Valentines Day. Let us express our love and appreciation for our valued friends and loved ones.

THE SUPREME HAPPINESS IN LIFE IS THE CONVICTION THAT WE ARE LOVED AND NEEDED

God bless America, our troops , veterans and their families.

Linda Mitchell, President

VA Homeless Vets Update 25: In an effort to keep veterans from turning to the streets, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced 5 DEC that it will offer $100 million in grants to local agencies that help returning troops in need. The VA estimates that 107,000 veterans are without a place to stay on any given night and has committed to eliminating the mounting problem by 2015. The VA’s most recent program will enable community agencies to apply for grants from a $100 million pot, so that they can intervene before former servicemen and servicewomen are forced to give up their homes. "The problems that lead to homelessness begin long before veterans and their families are on the streets," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said in a statement.

"By putting more resources into prevention services for people at risk of becoming homeless, we will continue to help veterans and their families get back on their feet and turn their lives around." The program aims to help more than 35,000 veterans and families. Offering veterans training, education and counseling — among other services — is critical before returning troops resort to living in cardboard boxes. Homeless veterans are more likely to develop

life-threatening diseases — and remain on the streets longer — than non-veteran homeless people, according to a study conducted by the 100,000 Homeless Campaign released in November. Those who have served this nation as veterans should never find themselves on the streets, living without care and without hope, Shinseki said.

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS (ALR)

The Chapter 21 ALR held our January Meeting on Thursday, January 5th with 23 members present. Welcome to our newest member, Kerry Boardman! The weather was wonderful for this time of year and we had several members ride their bikes to the meeting. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and opening prayer we got down to business.

Our Assistant (Vice as he likes to be called) Director Phil Greco briefed the results of the shotgun raffle which raised funds for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund. He also provided an update on the planned Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) Appreciation Dance scheduled for February 24, 2012. For those that don’t know, the PGR was started by our brothers and sisters at American Legion Post 136 in Kansas and has grown to a national organization of more 220,000 members. Over the past several years we have done a lot of work with the PGR in our area and it is fitting that we take the time to say thanks and invite them to our post for an evening of music, dancing and fun. You never know, we may recruit some new Legionnaires along the way. I know that if this dance is approved by the House Committee, I will have applications available and I’m sure that Ed Murray will probably be lurking in the hallways trying to lasso as many of them as he can (We love you Ed). Phil has done an outstanding job on both of these major projects and on behalf of the entire ALR I want to say thanks for his leadership and his passion for all things American Legion. Phil looks like a tough guy but he has a heart as big as Texas and we are lucky to have him. Thanks Phil!

In other news, we unanimously approved a $100 donation to support our fellow Legionnaire and Paralympics Athlete Rene Peterson as he prepares for his winter sports competitions. Good luck Rene!

Also, we discussed getting together for dinner rides in the spring, summer and fall and the need for us to do things together as people who love motorcycling. That is after all the common denominator that brings us together at the Post. As the new Director I am committed to expanding our riding relationship beyond official missions and getting our families more involved in our group. This is shaping up to be an exciting year in ALR Chapter 21 and I am humbled by the confidence shown in me by my fellow riders. I will do my best to keep the momentum going into the New Year. Thanks to all of our new officers for stepping up and offering your support and leadership to our Chapter.

Lastly, I just want to thank Scott "Doc" Truby for his leadership and commitment to our Post and ALR Chapter 21. Doc has put his heart into our organization this past year and we are better for it. His leadership has inspired us to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more as legionnaires. Thanks Doc for all you do.

Post 21 American Legion Riders

Happy New Year to all the members of our American Legion Post 21 family. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard this past year to help make our programs a success.   Lincoln’s Birthday is a legal holiday in some U.S. states including California, Connecticut, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Indiana. It is observed on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth on February 12, 1809.

Washington was born on February 11, 1731, based on the Julian calendar then in use in the British Colonies. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the English Colonies (1752), he opted to begin observing his birthdate anniversary on the equivalent date of February 22, 1732.

POST HISTORY

Thank you Bill Liddle

A WAY TO CURB FORCE

Truman Says Early Action Could Have Prevented Last War(WII).

President Truman blamed the wait-and-see policy of the 30s for the second World war in a dedication speech last night at the American Legion building, 306 West Maple avenue, Independence.

Speaking before members of his home Legion post, the Tirey J. Ford post of which he is a life member, Mr. Truman said; "I believe that if action had been taken when Japan went into Manchuria in 1930 and when Mussolini went into Ethiopia in 1935 or if action had been taken against Hitler in 1938 there would not have been a second World war.

"My decision to send our boys into Korea was made with the belief and hope it would avert World War III."

President Truman opened his speech with a dedication of the Legion building, which was purchased two years ago by the post. It formerly was occupied by the Southwestern Bell Telephone company.

Mr. Truman is a life member of the post. The President arrived at the Legion quarters about 8 o’clock and stayed five minutes.

After his speech the President shook hands with J. E. Joyner, the incoming commander, and other post officers, and then left.

He was introduced by Clifford Crenshaw, toastmaster, who was commander of the post in 1949.

About 120 persons attended.

From the Legion building the President visited the Harpie club meeting on the third floor at 101 North Main street. The social club was organized years ago by several Independence men. The President has not had a chance to visit the club, of which he is a member, since 1946.

Post officers installed:

Don R. Haney, first vice-commander; Verne F. Jenkins. second vice-commander; R. H. Nelson. adjutant; James Lewis, finance officer; William Brizendine, chaplain: John

Weeks, historian; Dexter Perry, service officer; Oscar Morrman. sergent at arms, and Earl O. Roby, trusty.

John Gillam is the outgoing commander.

Auxiliary officers Installed:

Mrs. Leona Seamands, president; Mrs. Flora Luther, first vice-president: Mrs. Mabel Moody, second vice-president; Mrs. Maude Abel. secretary; Mrs. Irene Dyball, treasurer; Mrs. Violet Gray. historian; Mrs. Mary Kresget. sergeant at arms, and Mrs. Effie Burgess, chaplain.

SBP DIC Offset Update 31: Once again, at the eleventh hour, Congress shot down efforts to eliminate the "Widows Tax". Spouses of deceased military retirees will continue to have their SBP payments offset by DIC and retirees will continue to have their retirement pay reduced by irreversible premiums intended for 55% of their retirement pay offset by $14,340 DIC or more annually. The amendment to the fiscal year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act to eliminate the offset did not survive the House/Senate Conference committee despite efforts of the military community. When it comes reelection time those affected might want to remember the legislators appointed to the committee who made the decision to continue the offset. Their continued presence in office could be detrimental to future legislative efforts to eliminate the offset. While it is not known how each voted, the collective votes of the below Committee members enabled the offset to continue. It would be prudent to determine how your legislator voted before casting your vote in the next election:

HOW TO BE A PAID-UP-FOR-LIFE AMERICAN LEGION MEMBER

Any existing member of The American Legion, in good standing, can apply for PUFL Membership, providing the member’s post is in a department that participates in the National Paid-Up-For-Life (PUFL) Membership Plan. (The Department of Kansas does not participate since it maintains its own plan.) To be in good standing, the member must have a valid membership card for the current year. After January 1, a member is delinquent if dues for the current year are not paid, and would need to pay current dues before being eligible to purchase a PUFL. Should a PUFL member hold membership in a post whose charter has been canceled and the member is unable to effect a transfer, then the unused portion of the original fee will be refunded. The same will apply in the case of a member whose membership has been permanently revoked by the post. Except as stated, no refunds of PUFL membership fees will be made.

COST OF A PAID-UP-FOR-LIFE MEMBERSHIP

A PUFL membership is based on two factors - the member’s age at the time of purchase and the total dues of the post at the same time. The total dues of the post include the department and national per capitas and the amount of the annual dues retained by the post. The dues amount used to compute the cost may NOT be less than the sum of the department and national per capitas combined. The chart below shows the monthly payment for a PUFL Membership for any age and for most post dues. Pick out your age group (your age at last birthday) then find your post dues in the left-hand column and follow that line across to your age column to find the cost. For example, if the member’s current dues are $35.00 and is 67 years old, the monthly payment would be $20.56. If the member prefers to pay in full, the total fee would be $740.00 (36 months x $20.56 rounded to the nearest dollar).

A copy of the member’s separation form (i.e. DD214) or current active duty military ID must be attached to the completed application; if neither is available, a copy of the member’s current driver’s license may be accepted. The PUFL application will not be accepted without the appropriate documentation.

To clear up some confusion on this matter of Lowe's and Home Depot. Please note the differences.
